Whole Body Scanning
For individuals at risk of conditions such as bowel cancer, lung cancer or heart disease due to genetic or lifestyle factors a health screening scan can give reassurance that all is well or allow early treatment of a condition before it becomes life threatening. Simply being made aware of early signs of heart disease, for example, may allow modification of risk factors by simple measures such as diet, exercise or stopping smoking.
Dr. Crowe and a group of his consultant radiologist colleagues offer a screening CT scan based service, Scan and Screen, with scans being performed on the state of the art 64 slice multidetector CT scanner at the Priory Hospital. Within the group of consultants are specialists in lung CT, cardiac CT and virtual colonoscopy bowel CT and the services range from a simple lung nodule scan for smokers all the way to a comprehensive whole body scan incorporating a CT coronary angiogram.
As with any health screening procedure the benefits of the scan itself should outweigh any risks and as CT scanning does involve a small radiation risk these scans are offered only to those whose risk factors justify them. Before booking a scan with Scan and Screen a consultant radiologist will go through a questionnaire with you over the phone and make a recommendation about which type of scan, if any, is required.
